STOP ACORN TYPE FRAUD: PASS THE PICTURE VOTER ID INITIATIVE NOW
In 2008, the liberal group ACORN was caught attempting to file thousands of
fraudulent voter register forms in a huge national scandal. Here in Las Vegas, ACORN's illegal
incentive scheme encouraged fraud by paying canvassers to turn in dozens of voter registration forms
each day, even if the "voters" had fake names like Mickey Mouse or the starting line-up of the
Dallas cowboys. The Las Vegas Metro Police Department sent agents to raid the Las Vegas ACORN office
and charged two employees with felony voter fraud. Following the raid, the Nevada Secretary of
State, Ross Miller claimed he purged the voter rolls, but there is no way to verify that except by
requiring voters to show a Picture ID when they vote.
Not only has the constitutionality of voter ID been upheld by the Supreme Court in 2008, it also
helps to uphold the integrity of our democratic election system. After all, we need a picture ID to
buy beer or to gamble.
Democrats and their liberal special interest groups have consistently opposed an effort to require
ID at the polls. Just two years ago in Indiana, the state's Democratic party teamed with the ACLU
to fight a new state law requiring voters to show government-issued identification before casting
their ballots. The case went to the United States Supreme Court 2008, where the justices voted
overwhelmingly 6-3 in favor of allowing states to require ID at the polls.
The regional director of ACORN and the Democrats asserted the Las Vegas Metro Police raid was
politically-motivated. "The raid was a stunt designed perhaps to make them look tough on voter
fraud," Matthew Henderson, the southwest regional director for ACORN, told the Washington Post in
2008.
I believe if Ross Miller is truly tough on voter fraud, he will support my 2010 ballot initiative to
require picture ID at the polls.
I believe we need this ballot initiative to be brought before the people of Nevada now. Nevadans
have the right to decide if they value their democracy enough to ensure its authenticity. I am
sponsoring an initiative for the November 2010 ballot requiring voters to show a government-issued
picture ID when they vote. This common sense law will protect all of us from the felony voter fraud
that was nearly pulled off by ACORN in this last election.
